OPITO IMIST Online

07 / 12 / 2020

OPITO released new temporary guidelines in March 2020 to help implement OPITO training standards during the Covid-19 pandemic. These guidelines cover the delivery of underpinning knowledge, theory learning and practical learning outcomes. IMIST Online is now available to complete without the need to attend an invigilation centre.

Since 2011 IMIST Online has been recording learner data.

The Offshore Petroleum Industry Training Organisation (OPITO) is the global skills body for the energy sector established in 1991. An industry-owned organisation, OPITO works with governments, national oil companies, operators, and contractors, offering a range of services and products to meet international skills needs and support workforce development.

The OPITO International Minimum Industry Safety Training Standard 5312 (IMIST) was created in 2010 to provide all employees in the oil and gas industry with the necessary safety knowledge both onshore and offshore.

The programme introduces new starts to the fundamentals and ensures that knowledge is maintained in the existing workforce. The OPITO IMIST certificate is valid for four years after which a reassessment is required or more frequently if the candidate has not worked in the industry for at least 12 months.

IMIST consists of nine modules which learners must demonstrate an understanding of:

  • Hazardous Environment
  • Working Safely
  • Risk Assessment Process
  • Permit to Work
  • Asset Integrity
  • Manual Handling
  • Hazardous Substances
  • Working at Height
  • Mechanical Lifting Activities

"IMIST provides uniformity in training and ensures that everyone, regardless of their employer, role or discipline, has the same basic safety understanding and can perform their role to the same standard."

IMIST-Online is the OPITO approved eLearning re-assessment course for experienced workers and is a convenient alternative to the two-day classroom course. The course can be accessed directly from Mintra or an IMIST approved training centre.

IMIST-Online is available in three languages to be purchased and assigned to your candidates on mintra.com and on your company portal for Trainingportal customers:

Employing companies can also apply to become an IMIST invigilation centre and train their staff internally. 40% of candidates sit IMIST-Online through their employer's approved internal invigilation centre.

IMIST Online utilises a ‘FastTrack’ refresher assessment model, which tests the candidate’s existing knowledge upfront. On completion of the pre-assessment, the course is then tailored to focus the learning on the individual’s knowledge gaps. Once the candidate has completed the learning content, they are presented with a final assessment on the remaining topics. Any failed questions generate the related learning content and further questions are asked until the 100% pass mark is reached.

The key benefits of this model are:

Personalised course to the individual’s specific knowledge gaps at that time. 33% of the content is removed on average by the pre-assessment

Experience saves time by rewarding existing knowledge. 80 minutes is saved on average by the pre-assessment

Confirms 100% understanding of the IMIST standard by cycling content and assessment
