OPITO released new temporary guidelines in March 2020 to help implement OPITO training standards during the Covid-19 pandemic. These guidelines cover the delivery of underpinning knowledge, theory learning and practical learning outcomes. IMIST Online is now available to complete without the need to attend an invigilation centre.
Since 2011 IMIST Online has been recording learner data.
The Offshore Petroleum Industry Training Organisation (OPITO) is the global skills body for the energy sector established in 1991. An industry-owned organisation, OPITO works with governments, national oil companies, operators, and contractors, offering a range of services and products to meet international skills needs and support workforce development.
The OPITO International Minimum Industry Safety Training Standard 5312 (IMIST) was created in 2010 to provide all employees in the oil and gas industry with the necessary safety knowledge both onshore and offshore.
The programme introduces new starts to the fundamentals and ensures that knowledge is maintained in the existing workforce. The OPITO IMIST certificate is valid for four years after which a reassessment is required or more frequently if the candidate has not worked in the industry for at least 12 months.
IMIST consists of nine modules which learners must demonstrate an understanding of:
