Is previous experience required?
No previous experience is required to complete this course. Basic nautical knowledge including an understanding of terrestrial and electronic navigation as well as practical experience on board are recommended.

Is there an assessment?
Once you have completed the course, you will be asked a series of questions to check your knowledge and understanding. These are based on the learning objectives for the course and have a pass mark of 70%.
• Explain how to identify dangerous areas through tidal calculation, chart usage or the use of physical navigational aids, such as leading lights
• List best practices for passage planning preparation with a focus on coastal waters
• Describe how to enhance navigation in confined waters through modern functions such as path predictors
