This course is based upon the International Well Control Forum (IWCF) Level 1 Syllabus

• Describe how hydrocarbon reservoirs are formed
• Describe the life cycle concept
• Identify the different types of wells
Section 2: Drilling a Well
• Describe pressure
• Identify the ‘drilling window’
• Describe how a well is drilled from ‘spud’ through to completion
Section 3: Drilling Rigs and Well Control Equipment
• Identify the various types of drilling rigs
• Describe the well control equipment
Section 4: Well Integrity
• Describe well barriers
• Identify the role of human factors in well integrity
Section 5: Well Intervention
• Describe basic well intervention techniques
Section 6: Well Control Events and their Consequences
• Describe well kicks and their consequences during drilling
• Describe the loss of well control in a production environment
Section 7: Well Control Incident Prevention
• Describe well monitoring
• Describe a ‘kick’ incident
• Describe how the well is shut-in during various incidents
• Identify ‘well kill’ methods
