Meet Graham Campbell: Building Better Systems & Stronger Communities

From teaching himself programming as a teenager to helping shape the future of Mintra's OCS Crew Management platform, Senior Software Developer Graham Campbell combines technical curiosity with a strong sense of community and a passion for continuous learning.

Growing up in the small Scottish village of Carnwath, Graham spent much of his childhood outdoors, building dens, playing football and exploring the countryside with friends. At home, another interest was beginning to take shape. Fascinated by computers and inspired by early video games, he started teaching himself programming in the late 1980s, long before he realised it could become a profession.

"One of the interesting things about the technology sector is the constant change. I remember vividly when Google came into existence; aside from the ability to search, I was fascinated by the hardware, the bigger and faster processors.

The advances in broadband have made one of the biggest impacts too; dial-up used to be challenging, but now we can stream so easily.”

After leaving school, Graham initially worked in a range of manual jobs, but it didn't take long to realise that he wanted something different. He returned to education, earned an HND in Software Development and began what has now become a career spanning more than 25 years in software engineering.

Today, Graham is a Senior Software Developer at Mintra, working within the .NET team on the OCS product suite. Since joining the company in 2023, he has focused on enhancing the Crew on Board system and supporting the ongoing development of Mintra's HR solutions.

"I've always enjoyed problem-solving, and technology is constantly evolving, which keeps things interesting," he says. "There is always something new to learn."

Much of Graham's current work centres on improving how data is synchronised between vessels, rigs and shore-based systems. It is technically complex work, but also highly rewarding.

"Being able to improve performance and make systems work better for our customers is really satisfying, especially when you understand the impact it can have on day-to-day operations."

Before joining Mintra, Graham spent much of his career developing a variety of software and delivered projects that generated significant efficiencies for customers.

One project, which streamlined online order fulfilment processes for a major retailer, helped save the business around half a million pounds per annum.

As well as being attracted to Mintra’s technology, he was attracted to the culture.

"There is a great level of trust and transparency. You feel involved in what is happening across the business and have the flexibility to manage your work. It's also rewarding to know that the systems we build help shipping companies run their operations more effectively."

Outside of work, football remains a big part of Graham's life. A lifelong Glasgow Rangers supporter, he still plays several times a week and enjoys keeping active, spending time outdoors with his wife, walking and taking in the stunning views of the local Scottish scenery. He is equally happy reading (as long as it’s science fiction), watching films or unwinding with a video game, especially his current obsession, Forza Horizon 6, an exciting open-world racing game set in breathtaking Japanese landscapes and urban environments.

Community is also important to him. Graham serves on his local Community Council & Development Trust, helping to improve facilities for the small village he lives in. This involves organising events, securing funding for local initiatives and resolving issues.

"It's so rewarding to be able to give something back and help maintain that community spirit. Since the pub is no longer central to village life, you have to work harder to create it."

Looking ahead, he is excited by both emerging technologies and the future of Mintra's OCS platform.

"We're working with technologies that are mostly new to me, which makes this an exciting time. I enjoy learning and exploring new ways of doing things."

It is that curiosity, combined with a genuine desire to solve problems and support others, that continues to drive Graham both professionally and personally.
