Further Information - K CAT CPD NI Accredited - Part 3 (2026) Training

Description

K-CAT CPD NI Accredited – Part 3 is part of Kongsberg Maritime’s structured five-year Continuing Professional Development (CPD) programme, accredited by The Nautical Institute and designed to support the revalidation of NI Dynamic Positioning Operator (DPO) and DP Vessel Maintainer (DPVM) certificates.

Part 3 provides a structured learning path designed to refresh and strengthen DP knowledge, maintain operational competence and keep participants up to date with evolving regulations, industry guidance, technology and lessons learned from DP operations.

The course covers key areas including MTS guidance and Flag State requirements, regulatory and industry updates, Management of Change, DP emergency drills, roles and responsibilities of key DP personnel, redundancy concepts, position reference systems and sensors, DP networks and Independent Joystick Systems, power management, thrusters and thruster control systems, DP operational procedures, SIMOPS and mission-specific operations.

Delivered fully online, the course combines interactive digital learning, knowledge checks and quizzes with guided practical exercises, allowing participants to progress through the programme at their own pace within the designated CPD year.

Successful completion of all required learning activities and the final assessment contributes to the participant’s continuous professional development within The Nautical Institute’s five-year CPD pathway.

Learning Objectives

Upon successful completion of Part 3, participants will be able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of relevant MTS guidance, Flag State requirements and recent regulatory updates affecting DP operations.
  • Interpret new or revised industry publications and apply lessons learned from recent DP station-keeping events.
  • Explain the principles and operational importance of Management of Change (MOC) within DP operations.
  • Describe the objectives and compliance requirements of DP emergency drills, including performance evaluation criteria.
  • Define the roles and responsibilities of key DP personnel in accordance with IMCA M117.
  • Apply advanced understanding of DP redundancy concepts, including Worst Case Failure (WCF), Worst Case Failure Design Intent (WCFDI), cross-connection management and configuration risk assessment.
  • Evaluate the operational characteristics, advantages, limitations and failure considerations of Position Reference Systems and sensors, including hydroacoustic systems, INS, taut wire systems, gangway systems and wind sensors.
  • Demonstrate understanding of the operational principles, redundancy philosophy and control station requirements of the Independent Joystick System (IJS).
  • Assess the architecture, risks and lessons learned related to DP network systems.
  • Evaluate power management principles, including open/closed bus operations, short circuit testing, DC grids and power limitations in accordance with IMO 1580.
  • Analyse the operational characteristics, failure modes and control principles of various thruster types and thruster control systems, including emergency and backup controls.
  • Apply knowledge of DP Operations Manuals, company procedures, DP logs, checklists, capability plots, footprint plots and SIMOPS considerations.
  • Evaluate mission-specific operational planning for heavy lift, float-over, accommodation and drilling operations, including sensor integration and redundancy implications.
  • Apply structured analytical thinking through practical exercises, including Consequence Analysis.

Assessment

Online assessments are included throughout the course to verify participants’ understanding of the CPD content. Participants must successfully complete all required course activities and a final online assessment. A minimum score of 80% is required to pass the final assessment. Upon successful completion of all course requirements, a course completion certificate will be issued.

System Requirements

The course can be accessed via PC, tablet or smartphone and supports both online and offline learning. An internet connection is required for initial access, content download, synchronization of learning progress and submission of assessments. Once the required content has been downloaded, selected learning activities can be completed offline, supporting participants with limited or intermittent connectivity while offshore.
